Module 7: Introduction to Meditation, Bandhas & Pranayama
Objectives: Student teachers to understand the effects of pranayama on the whole being.
Contra indications and benefits of different breathing techniques and when/where to use these in class.
Learn the location of the bandhas, how to cue students in class and which poses are the easiest to teach and why we use bandhas
Learn benefits of meditation and introduce students to self-practice. Learn two meditation techniques
What is mindfulness and how we can use the concept of mindfulness in a yoga class as well as in our daily lives.
Students will develop an understanding of the mantras and how to use a mantra in meditation
Content:
• What is pranayama
- Review full yogic breath
- Ujjayi pranayama
- Nadhi Shodhana pranayama
- Sheetali Pranayama
• Contra indications
• Introduction to the bandhas and granthis
- Jalandhara Bandha
- Moola Bandha
- Uddiyana Bandha
• What is meditation
• Introduction to mindfulness
• Meditation techniques
- Body scan
- Breath awareness
• Mantras
• Yoga class focusing on pranayama, meditation and restorative poses
