How Deep Stretch taught me how to enjoy breathing

Breathe.

Breathe deep and with intention.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Repeat.

I’ve been breathing my entire life. It was literally the first thing I did – you might say it came naturally. So you can imagine my surprise when I started practicing yoga to find that there is so much more to breathing than what I’ve done all day (and night) long my entire life…

It happens all the time - we’ve had all kinds of people tell us they would love to join a class but they just can’t touch their toes! They say,
yoga sounds amazing but I can’t even … (you fill in the rest). Well dear friends, this may come as a surprise, but you don’t need to be stretchy to join a stretchy class! Let us tell you why.

What’s the difference between yoga and Pilates?

19/12/2016

Before I started practicing yoga regularly at a studio I may have dabbled in the occasional mat Pilates and ‘yoga’ class at my local gym. To be honest I had no idea what I was doing 95% of the time and I felt they were both interchangeable with an occasional spin class!

While that was over a decade ago now, I still remember the days when I couldn’t have told you what made Pilates any different from yoga. It’s a question that I am still asked on a regular basis today by those who know they want to start SOMETHING that stretches their body and strengthens their core (or maybe just helps them to chill out!). With many studios, gyms and fitness centres offering both it’s easy to get confused! So, here’s our Stretch-style simple guide to the differences between the practices:

Why do we practice yoga without shoes?

It's part of the routine right? You've had a hard day. You're stressed. You're really hanging out for a yoga sesh (only slightly intended semi-rhyming). You pull off your shoes, your socks too, and gawk at your unimpressive bare-feet. Shrug it off, grab your mat, and ta-da! You're ready to go. This time though, you catch yourself curiously thinking "bare feet - I wonder why?".

Burned out? Perhaps restorative yoga is worth a shot...

Restorative Yoga
You know the feeling – when you’re not unwell, just a little off. Maybe you’ve been working too many hours, pushing yourself a little too hard, maybe even dealing with some stuff in your personal life. It happens. In life we ebb and flow and sometimes we burn out. The logical solution is a holiday, but sometimes we don’t have the time, the money, the required full time nanny for the children….

10 Everyday Uses for Bolsters

We all know that bolsters are amazing in yoga class! They give a blissful heart opener in reclining butterfly (supta baddha konasana), are super nice to hug in child’s pose (balasana) and feel simply divine underneath the knees in relaxation time (savasana). If you’ve been thinking of taking one of these bad boys home, but are hesitating because you might not use it as much as you’d like, we’ve come up with 10 ways to use them everyday (and totally get your money’s worth!).

Why Do We Say Namaste At The End Of Class?

21/6/2016

Author: Essie

Ahhh Namaste. A word that seems to appear a lot lately. It sounds nice. It feels nice to say (and secretly it makes me feel super cool when I say it in unison with my yoga teacher at the end of class). Despite saying it more times that I can count now, I have to admit that until recently I didn’t really know the origin of the word, let alone the true authentic meaning…

Yoga found more effective than memory training for Alzheimer’s

Another day, another study showing the amazing health benefits of yoga. A team of neuroscientists at UCLA have put yoga to the test looking at the effect of a 12 week yoga course on a group of 25 participants aged over 55. They found that the course helped to minimise the emotional and cognitive problems that often precede both Alzeimer’s disease and other related forms of dementia. The findings were simply amazing – yoga has now become the new gold standard for managing mild cognitive impairment showing stronger results than the memory enhancement exercises which have previously been recommended.

Functional Yoga

This week at Stretch we were graced with an incredible yin yoga teacher running a 50 hr training. Jo Phee is a senior assistant to Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers – the founders of yin yoga, and an amazing teacher and even more amazing trainer in her own right.

Among the vast amounts of knowledge that she imparted on us included her argument for switching from alignment yoga to functional yoga – something that we wholeheartedly agreed with and you’ll definitely be seeing a whole bunch more of at Stretch!

We don't care if you're vegan, lacto-ovo-pescatarian, fruitatarian or paleo (or even whether you know what those things mean!). Whether you love bacon, are addicted to cheesecake or just can't resist a plate of ribs every now and then, we can all eat more 'yogic-ly' by making small simple changes.

This a post for everyone who wants to eat better – better for your health, better for the planet and better for your wallet! This is our advice on how to eat like a yogi no matter WHAT diet you follow - and if you really like, you can have your bacon and eat it too!

Om, Excuse Me

Throughout Yoga classes worldwide the chanting sound “OM” is used daily. But what does this really mean? Why do some Yoga teachers greet you with a hello to suddenly switch to a foreign language? Can you opt out, or do you really need to take part (even if you feel stupid!)?

How to Get Your Yoga Mojo Back

20/7/2015

Picture
It happens to all of us at some point. We’re going well – attending regular classes, nailing new poses, feeling on top of the world when we practice and then - *bam* - our mojo just disappears. What was once the hour we looked forward to all day becomes the thing that we want to avoid the most. We start coming out with excuses like “I’m not feeling the best” or “Work is really just too crazy right now”, but what we really mean is that we’ve lost our yoga mojo and we don’t know how to get it back!

Is it wrong to nap in savasana?

16/6/2015

Ahh the age-old question that has plagued yogis for centuries (or maybe just the last few years…). Is sleeping in savasana (pronounced sha-VAH-suh-nuh) a small yogic faux pas, or a serious breach of the limbs? Will your teacher kick you out? Are you doing it all wrong? Or are you simply making the most of a well presented opportunity?

Will Yoga Make My Thighs Thinner?

24/2/2015

As a yoga teacher I’ve been asked lots of shades of this question. Will yoga make my thighs thinner, my ass rounder, my stomach flatter or my arms more toned? Will yoga help me lose weight or detox from Christmas? I get asked far more about how yoga can change the way you look than I ever get asked about how yoga can change the way you feel. For a practice that at its core is spiritual in nature, some days it really feels like yoga has lost its way...

We’ve all been there. You remembered to pack your yoga clothes (finally!). You even brought your yoga mat. You’ve waiting for the clock to hit ‘yoga time’ and a few minutes before – disaster strikes! The phone rings, your boss calls an emergency meeting or an email comes into your inbox with some kind of crazy crisis. Yoga plans are thrown out the window and your stress levels increase rather than the soothing decrease you were looking for. You’re stuck at your desk but in desperate need of yoga – if only there was yoga you could do at your desk! (There is - read below!) ;)

The yoga teacher dictionary: what do their cues really mean

9/11/2014

I was recently in a yoga class where the teacher told me to ‘sparkle through my toes’ (which I assume meant to spread them, though I could be wrong…) and it got me thinking about some of the common cues that yoga teachers use that sometimes don’t make a lot of sense. If you’re like me and at times could use a translator in a yoga class, then hopefully this list might be a useful read! Here are some of my personal favourites (and I may be guilty of using a couple of them myself):

There comes a time in every yogis life (usually more than once) when they find themselves in a yoga class that they really aren’t enjoying. You might find yourself hating the teacher, hating the person next to you and hating yoga in general. So what do you do? Do you stick it out quietly and never come back again, or do you pack up and walk out? Here is out guide to yogi etiquette in those not-so-enjoyable classes:

Why do yoga teachers contradict each other?

14/9/2014

Beach Hanumanasa (Splits)
If you’ve been practicing for a little while, you may have started to find yoga teachers contradicting each other. One teacher tells you to look up to the ceiling and one tells you to look straight. One tells you to place your feet parallel, and one advises the back should be on an angle. So who do you listen to? Which teacher is right, and which is wrong, and is it rude to do a pose differently to how they suggest?

Why Yoga Isn't Just for Girls

Reverse Warrior Man Beach
Like most interesting activities of times past, yoga was developed by men, for men and practiced only by men (how rude!). It is believed that the start of women participating in this ancient practice wasn’t until the late 1800’s, and even then didn’t start to gain popularity until the 1970’s, so how, in such a short period of time, have women seemingly taken over?

Rebuttals to the 6 Most Common Excuses Not to Try Yoga

7/8/2014

Funny Yoga Sign
As a long time yoga student turned yoga teacher I have been trying to get everyone I know to try yoga for years, and honestly think the world would be better if everyone did yoga. I mean EVERYONE. Every man, woman and child should be practicing some form of yoga daily. But hey, I would settle for a few of my friends trying it just once before they dismissed it. And I would love for my friend who tried a hot power vinyasa class and decided it was some form of torture to maybe give another style a chance!
